Both he and his wife were burn in County Antrim or Athlone, Ireland. They both attended The Billy Church in Ireland as children. They married in Ireland and had one son, James Brown, in 1877. In 1878, they came to the United States and settled in Lawrenceville (Pittsburgh area) in Pennsylvania where he worked as a teamster for $9 a week. He worked from 5 a.m. until 5 p.m., but most people worked from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., 6 days per week. During hard times, he worked for Andrew Carnegie, work which paid one silver dollar a day. He had 2 sons, James and Thomas, who worked at horse shoeing. Food prices at the time were; coffee, 10 cents per pound; eggs, 3 dozen for 25 cents; oleo, three pounds for 25 cents; and pork chops, three pounds for 25 cents. Turkey and chicken were rare treats during those years and served only on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Winters were long and cold. To keep meat, they could hang it outside in the cold. The family later moved to the country near what is now North Park and were then able to raise some of their food. Most roads in that area were dirt; the roads in Lawrenceville were brick.
